I create my weavings on a 16 shaft AVL Compu-Dobby floor loom and focus on image-based textiles. I begin with original designs drawn on graph paper then transfer them to a weaving software program that interfaces with the floor loom.
My weavings are created in a structure called “Summer & Winter”, a supplementary weft weave. Unlike tapestry, which allows realistic images, the floor loom and Summer & Winter structure confine my motifs to gridded patterns. I enjoy the limits of this structure and often incorporate hand-manipulated techniques such as inlay, pick-up, clasped weft, brocade and hand-stitching to contrast with the formal geometry.
My joy in weaving comes from “painting” with weft yarns, blending and modulating colours within the confines of the grid. An important feature of my designs is the use of overlapping images, each layer woven with a series of different weft colours. I am inspired by the natural world and drawn to express images of the shore, waters, forests and creatures of Pender Harbour where I live. |
