Handwoven textiles combined with surface design techniques including felting, devore, cloque and machine embroidery.

Handwoven cloth inevitably veers towards the horizontal and the vertical, following the inherent nature of intersecting warps and wefts. Kate enjoys exploring ways to create interesting cloth that breaks free from this grid. One way she has done this is by altering the surface texture of her handwoven cloth. She weaves with yarns that react differently in the finishing process, causing the cloth to move, bump and fold into irregular shapes and lines.

In her most recent work -- the Ellipse Series – she has applied the surface design technique of devore to her handwoven cloth. The beauty of this is that she can weave a very simple cloth yet create more complex shapes and lines.

Kate is currently pursuing an Advanced Certificate in textiles at Capilano University.
