Jean L. Kares established TextileContext Studio on Granville Island nearly 20 years ago, and has maintained it not only as her workspace but also as one of Vancouver’s few locations where contemporary textile art can be seen on a regular basis.
Many of Jean’s pieces begin as responses to Asian art and philosophy, and she combines images and techniques such as dyeing, block and screen printing, Japanese shibori (stitched and bound resist), and paste resist to create harmonious and visually rich juxtapositions of pattern and colour.
Her work is generally made “whole cloth”; that is, she doesn’t create separate sections that are sewn together but rather executes all the design areas on one piece of fabric. This is a risky approach, as each additional operation increases the possibility of ruinous mistakes, but there is also the potential for unplanned and exciting results. |
